What can I do with it?
Photos and Scanning
What can I do with my photos at the library?
You can download your photos from your digital camera, scan your print photos, alter your photos with Photoshop, turn your photos into a slideshow and more!
How do I print photos?
The easiest way to print a photo in the size that you need is to first save the photo to the computer (the E:/ drive, or PATRON drive) or to a disk of your own, such as a USB device. Once you have saved the file, find your file using the MY COMPUTER icon on the computer's desktop, right click on it, and choose PRINT.
A Photo Printing Wizard will appear to walk you through the process. You can print 8x10, full page, regular 4x6, or even wallet size pictures. You will also have the option to select more pictures so that you can print multiple pictures on one page. Finish the print process like normal and pick up your pictures from the print station.
How do I remove red-eye from a photo?
Open your photo in Adobe Photoshop Elements (found under PROGRAMS on the START menu.) Use the zoom tool to enlarge the area of the image you want to retouch. Click the RED EYE BRUSH TOOL in the tool palette. Choose a brush size from the brush pop-up palette on the options bar. Click the box next to Replacement on the options bar, and choose the color that you want to replace the red eye with from the Color Picker. Click the red eye brush tool.
Click the arrow to the right of the Tolerance box in the options bar, and then move the slider to select a Tolerance value. (The tolerance setting defines how similar in color a pixel must be, in order to be replaced---The higher the tolerance value, the more of the red will be replaced with the replacement color). Drag the brush over the area you want to retouch. Any pixels that match the current color change to the replacement color.
Note: If you choose a dark color, such as black, as a replacement color, the color appears gray. The red eye brush tool paints with a transparent black by using a blending mode, so that the highlights in the eye are preserved.
How do I resize a picture in order to post on MySpace/Hi5/facebook/match.com?
To resize a picture, open it in Adobe Photoshop Elements. On the image menu, choose “Resize” then “Image Size”. An options window will appear. Images for the web are generally not more than 800x600 pixels. You can adjust your image to this size by changing the long side of your picture to 800. Leave the “Constrain proportions” box checked, and the other dimension will adjust accordingly so that your picture does not become distorted.
If a website requires pictures to be another size, for instance 600 x 400 pixels, simply use these steps to adjust the dimensions as needed.
Once your picture is the correct size, save your work by choosing Save from the file menu (to overwrite your original larger file), or Save As (to save a new smaller copy in addition to your original).
How do I scan a photo or document?
First, place your photo or document face down on the upper right corner of the scanning bed. To quickly scan a photo, simply choose the SCAN A PICTURE icon on the desktop of the PC. A scanning wizard will appear to walk you through the steps of scanning.
For more options, or to scan a document, choose EPSON SMART PANEL from the file menu. A window will appear with multiple options—choose the one called SCAN AND SAVE. A new window will appear. At the top right, choose PROFESSIONAL MODE from the drop-down box. For Auto Exposure Type, choose either DOCUMENT or PHOTO. IMAGE TYPE and RESOLUTION can also be changed with the drop-down boxes.
When you’re ready, choose PREVIEW and a new window will appear that shows what is on the scanning bed. Select what you would like to scan by using your mouse to click and drag so that a box appears around your item, then choose SCAN to scan your item.
When you are done scanning, close the preview window and the Epson Scan window, and a new window will appear with the items that have been scanned. On this screen you can rename the files, if desired. Choose NEXT, and your save options will appear. In the top box you can select where to save the file, and below that you can select the type of file to save as. JPEG (.JPG) is normal for pictures, and PDF is most common for documents. Once you have selected these options, choose SAVE and your files will be on the drive or disk you selected.
RSS feeds
What are RSS feeds?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format for content distribution. If you're constantly visiting the same sites every day to see what's new, RSS feeds are the perfect solution. Instead of going to numerous sites, they'll come to you! For more information, click here.
Email
Where can I signup for a free email account?
There are many free email providers available, all with different features and amounts of storage space. Some of the most common are Hotmail (www.hotmail.com), Yahoo Mail (mail.yahoo.com), SAFe-mail (www.safe-mail.net), and AOL mail (www.aol.com). Simply go to the website of the service you would like to use, and follow their on-screen instructions for setting up a free email account.
How can I learn more about using my email account?
Most free email providers will have a wide range of help topics available to answer your questions. You can also sign up for the library’s free Introduction to Email class by clicking here or asking the Technology Center Associate for assistance. The class uses Yahoo mail as an example.
