The Firm

by John Grisham

Mitchell McDeere is graduating from Harvard Law School third in his class and has been recruited by several top law firms.  As a matter of fact he has three solid offers in his pocket when he is approached by a small, very private, very rich tax firm in Memphis.  They make him an offer that looks too good to be true, both financially and career-wise.  Mitch starts off working 100 + hours a week, billing his clients $150 per hour for the firm and realistically expects to make partner in five years, but something is wrong.  Two of the firm's law partners die in a suspicious diving accident in the Cayman Islands and Mitch is approached by a man named Tarrance who claims to be with the FBI.  He is told that the firm's "security" people have bugged his phone, his house, and probably his car, and that he is probably in great danger.  The danger and intrigue build throughout the story with surprise twists at every turn.  Author John Grisham, himself a criminal defense attorney, also gives his readers a glimpse of the high stress life of the career attorney.  I would definitely recommend this one as a good weekend read.
