Gaming Room

How does it work?

Open to anyone with a library card account in good standing and a photo ID, one of which will be held until all equipment is returned.

Visit the Media Services desk to check out games and controllers. When others are waiting, there is a 1-hour limit.

What can I do there?

Why does the library have a Gaming Room?

Many customers ask us why we allow gaming in the library. Aren't libraries for learning? Of course they are! According to an article in Library Technology Reports, gaming fosters many different types of learning.

  1. Games test our problem-solving skills
  2. Games are inclusive
  3. Games create community
  4. Games facilitate learning
  5. Games provide fields for practice of leadership and team skills
  6. Games develop identity

But aren't video games violent?

Like television and movies, video games have an age-appropriate rating system.

The library's collection development policy states that we will only make video games available if they meet the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) criteria for content generally suitable for ages 10 and up (Everyone 10+).

Want to play even more games? Kids ages 2-12 are welcome to use the Digital Learning Computers in the Kids Center.
