Basket Case

by Carl Hiaasen

Basket Case is a mystery novel written by Carl Hiaasen, a syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald.  This is the ninth novel written by Mr. Hiaasen and as in his prior works of fiction, this novel takes place in Florida.  Mr. Hiaasen is well familiar with his native state where he's lived and worked all his life.

The story centers around an obituary writer for a South Miami daily paper named Jack Tagger.  Jack used to be a hotshot investigative reporter but circumstances and his big mouth got him in trouble with the paper's owner.  Now his life is spent suffering from obituary writer's "disease" (you'll have to read the book to find out what I mean) and driving his editor crazy.  He figures he can resurrect his career if just the right celebrity would die and he could yoke his "byline to some famous stiff".  That celebrity comes along in the form of Jimmy Stoma, the lead singer of the infamous Jimmy and the Slut Puppies.  Jimmy’s death appears to have been accidental but as Jack checks out the story, he has some doubts.  The trip takes off from there and doesn't slow down until the end.  There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.  Jack is a lovable cynic and you'll find yourself rooting for him to take on the bad guys and win.

Mr. Hiaasen has a humorous, entertaining writing style.  There is some bawdy dialog, however, so this writer may not be for everyone.  This was the first book I've read by Mr. Hiaasen but it won't be the last.  If you like mysteries with a taste of twisted humor then take a chance on Basket Case.  You won't be disappointed.
