Death Comes for the Archbishop

by Willa Cather

Truman Capote once said that Willa Cather was the finest woman author that America had ever produced, and anyone lucky enough to read Death Comes for the Archbishop will quickly come to understand how he was able to arrive at this sweeping judgement.  Cather’s clear, lucid, and uniquely personal command of the English language is almost achingly beautiful, and enables her to create “word pictures” of startling reality and immediacy.  Words, phrases, and mental pictures are guaranteed to linger in memory long after this lovely book has been returned to its honored place on the bookshelf.  Highly recommended reading.
