Anne Frank wrote mostly in her diary when she was in hiding. She was hiding because she was a Jew. The German group known as the Nazis were killing Jews because they wanted to purify the German race, therefore they killed Jews and handicapped people. The Franks had four people in their family. Otto and Edith Frank were the parents and Margot was the oldest child and Anne was the youngest. Also in hiding were Mr. And Mrs. Van Daan known in the diary as Van Pels. They had a boy named Peter. Peter was quiet, very quiet. Anne on the other hand was loud, mischievous and cheerful. Margot was in between. She could be noisy at times or quiet at times. The parents were always arguing over “idiotic things” as Anne put it in her diary.
Anne talks about people in the diary who help hide them, work on food stamps and helped with their safety. One of the friends they could trust was a dentist named Albert Dussel or Friz Pfeffer. She gave them different names in the diary for their protection.
There were some close calls. Some burglars were in the house and they could have told the police about people hiding. One hot summer day they heard five men’s voices downstairs. Next thing they knew they were forcing the people that were hiding the Franks to open the revolving bookcase. The men pulled out guns and a man named Karl Silberbaur arrested everybody. They were sent to concentration camps to be gassed. Anne and Margot died in a concentration camp in Bergen - Belson in March 1945. Edith died in Auschwitz in January 1945. Otto Frank was freed in late January 1945 when Auschwitz is liberated by the Russian army.
Otto returned to Amsterdam and published the diary of Anne Frank. He later moved to Basel, Switzerland and married Elfriede Geiringer in 1980. Otto died at the age of 91.
I recommend this book, because it is really mysterious. You can’t predict what happens. It is easy to get into her character. You can understand it better since it is coming from a teenager instead of an adult. I think you should also read Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary first, so you can understand more things in the original diary.
