Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

  by John Berendt

This book has been on the best seller list for some time and Arlene recommended it so I thought it was worth a try.  Also, we had visited Savannah a couple times and I was curious about what goes on beneath the surface.

The author moved to and lived in the Georgia city for a few years and became acquainted with a colorful assortment of characters, most of whom were aware they would be included in the book he was working on.  This combination travelogue/eyewitness account bogs down on some characters you may learn more about than you would care to know, such as the transsexual and the night club singer, but those segments can easily be skimmed.  One of the principal characters is involved in a murder and series of court trials that mystery fans may find interesting.  Humorous episodes and even voodoo make this a well rounded account of a unique American seacoast city.  The book will make you want to visit Savannah--or return if you’ve been before (some nice beaches in the area, too.)  As a Yankee, along with the author, you also may pause to ponder about what is really different about America’s South.
